Get to know some LGBTQ+ trailblazers
|
Team, June is the start of Pride Month, where we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and remember the struggles it took for the community to get the rights they deserve.
Before we introduce you to some trailblazing AZ Dems, we want to acknowledge the work is not finished when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights. Our AZ Dems continue to fight to make sure no one is fired or discriminated against due to their sexual orientation. And we continue to fight against harmful legislation targeting transgender youth.
The work is not done, but we will celebrate those who have fought so hard to get us to where we are now.
Ken Cheuvront was the first openly gay man elected to the Arizona House of Representatives after winning election to the 15th district in 1994. Cheuvront was re-elected to the State House several times and rose to lead the Democratic caucus in that chamber in 2001. Term limits forced Cheuvront to run for the State Senate in 2002, serving until 2011 due to term limits. He currently serves as a justice of the peace in Maricopa County.
Paula Aboud was the first openly lesbian member of the Arizona legislature. A longtime member of the Tucson Democratic Party, Aboud was first appointed to the State Senate in 2006. She successfully ran for a full term in 2006 and was re-elected until term limits prevented her from running again in 2012.
State Rep. Robert Meza currently serves the 30th district in the Arizona House of Representatives. In 2002, Meza became the first openly gay Hispanic legislator in the U.S. Meza won consecutive terms for the 14th District, then switched to the State Senate due to term limits. When term limits did not allow him to run for the State Senate any longer, Meza returned to the State House to represent District 30. He has won 10 consecutive elections since his first race in 2002. Meza joined others in creating the LGBTQ caucus in 2017.
While the work is not finished, we are thankful for these trailblazers and their work in Arizona.
Sincerely,
Arizona Democrats
