Dear John,

This weekend marks a momentous milestone for the United Kingdom, when we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

There has been a huge amount of change since she ascended the throne in 1952, including 14 different Prime Ministers, 14 US Presidents, wars, recessions, Covid-19, and countless other seismic world events.

Despite turmoil and political change, The Queen has remained a steadfast figure in our lives. She has dedicated her life to serving Britain and the Commonwealth, and is a figurehead for our country abroad.

This is a moment to celebrate, and a moment to thank Her Majesty The Queen for a lifetime of service.

It has been great to hear about various street parties and celebratory events that will be taking place across the Borders over the long weekend. I hope you and your family are able to enjoy this special weekend for the United Kingdom.

Kind regards.

Yours sincerely,

John
I was delighted to hear that my colleague Cllr Euan Jardine has been elected leader of Scottish Borders Council. This comes after the Scottish Conservatives won the most seats and the most votes in the Borders in the recent council elections.

There is a big job ahead, especially in the face of budget cuts for local services by the Scottish Government.

But I know that Cllr Jardine and his team are up to the task. I look forward to working closely with him to strengthen our local economy and improve our public services.

It was very exciting to be onboard the first train to leave the brand new Reston station in almost 60 years.

I used the train, alongside many other excited passengers, to travel down to Westminster for a busy week in Parliament.

We must pay tribute to people like Barrie Forrest, Tom Thorburn and the entire team from RAGES who have dedicated so much of their time to reinstating a station here.

I can’t wait to see the benefits that this new station will bring to our local area. With it now only taking 40 minutes to get to Edinburgh, 11 minutes to Berwick-upon-Tweed and about 60 minutes to get to Newcastle, it will undoubtedly open up job and educational opportunities for our young people in Berwickshire. The tourism opportunities will be massive too.
On the 18th and 19th June the Scottish Borders is playing host to highly prestigious event - The Sir Jackie Stewart Classic - at Thirlestane Castle.

In aid of Race against Dementia, the event will have Formula 1 cars, supercars, and the greatest ever collection of Sir Jackie's race cars.

More information about the event, including tickets, can be viewed here.
