** Gwynne backs the Big Jubilee Lunch
------------------------------------------------------------
Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, is reminding residents to get involved with ‘The Big Lunch’, which is even bigger this year thanks to Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The Big Lunch is an annual initiative organised by the Eden Project and backed by the National Lottery. Since starting in 2009, it has brought millions of people together across the UK to connect with neighbours, family and friends.
This year, however, is extra special as The Big Jubilee Lunch is an official part of the celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Over 12 million people are expected to celebrate with a Big Jubilee Lunch in their community.
Commenting on the Big Jubilee Lunch, Andrew Gwynne said:
“I’ve backed the Big Lunch for many years now, so it’s fantastic to see it becoming an official part of these historic Jubilee Celebrations.
It’s not too late to get involved, and the Big Lunch will run throughout the whole of July.
I’d encourage anyone across Denton and Reddish to get involved, it’s an amazing way to bring communities together this summer!”

** What the Platinum Jubilee means to me - my weekly article for the Tameside Reporter
------------------------------------------------------------
My earliest memory goes right back to 4 June 1977. My third birthday. Right in the middle of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
I was on a bus with my Mum and Dad, proudly sporting a third birthday badge. The bus conductor spotted it. He stopped the bus and left it idling next to a bakery on Stockport Road in Ashton, which he ran into. He emerged smiling, and delivered me a cupcake decorated with red, white, and blue icing.
I tell this story, both because it explains my lifelong love of cakes, but also because it says a lot about the importance of the Jubilee. 45 years on, I am still struck by the generous spirit that accompanies these moments of national celebration. It’s a celebration that Manchester has played a huge part in, notably hosting the Commonwealth Games back in 2002 during the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
On the Platinum Jubilee we commemorate the extraordinary achievement of 70 years on the throne, but also recognise how much has changed in that time.
It’s not just the world that’s changed, so too has Tameside. There wasn’t even a place called ‘Tameside’ in 1952 – that invention came twenty years later in the 1972 Local Government Act, and was born in 1974, the same year as me. The Charter of Incorporation as a Borough – a kind of birth certificate – with the Queen’s now sadly faded signature still holds pride of place in the Mayor’s parlour.
Back in 1952, many of Tameside’s towns were tiny places. Haughton Green was still a village separated from a much smaller Denton by open fields. There were no motorways. Likewise, Audenshaw was much smaller than today, before many of the new housing estates were built. Denton and Dukinfield boomed with industry. Denton, a hatting town; Dukinfield firmly in the cotton trade, with significant manufacturing and engineering works too, shipping goods all over what was still then the Empire.
We live in a different world now, one defined by progress, but also by new challenges.
When the Queen ascended to the throne in 1952, social media giants and cyber technology seemed a million miles away. How we interact has changed, as has the role of Government in a new digital age.
It’s also important to note that the Platinum Jubilee comes amid a cost of living crisis, as well as expanding inequalities. Just as the world has changed, so it must change again; becoming fairer and more prosperous.
That’s why I love the Jubilee. It’s an opportunity to celebrate our United Kingdom, to recognise how much we have achieved, and to remind ourselves to continue to work towards a brighter future.
** Gwynne thanks local heroes ahead of Volunteers Week 2022
------------------------------------------------------------
Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has thanked “local heroes” ahead of Volunteers Week 2022.
Volunteers Week, established in 1984, is all about recognising the incredible contribution millions of volunteers make to communities every day, as well as showcasing the range of opportunities available for people to get involved. The week, which runs from 1-7 June, is led in Partnership by NCVO ([link removed]) in England, WCVA ([link removed]) in Wales, Volunteer Scotland ([link removed]) , and Volunteer Now ([link removed]) .
This year’s theme is ‘A time to say thanks’ – recognising the role that volunteers have played, particularly in the pandemic response. During an exceptionally difficult couple of years, people from all walks of life around the UK have taken the time to volunteer and make a huge difference to their communities – just as they do every year.
This year’s campaign also takes place shortly after the launch of the Vision for Volunteering ([link removed]) , a movement to create a diverse, innovative, ambitious and person-centred future for volunteering. The Vision for Volunteering was led by NCVO, Volunteering Matters, the Association of Volunteer Managers and Sport England, in consultation with the volunteering sector. The Vision sets out a view of what volunteering needs look like, and how this will make volunteers feel about their activities by 2032, and will now form the basis of a conversation about how we can collectively deliver this future.
Gwynne, who helped found the local volunteering group ‘Friends of the Tame Valley ([link removed]) ’ in 2020, has taken the week as an opportunity to recognise those who go above and beyond.
Commenting, Andrew Gwynne said:
“Ahead of Volunteers Week 2022, I’d just like to thank all the local heroes across Denton and Reddish who take time to volunteer and help out in the local community.
I know from my own experience with Friends of the Tame Valley just how rewarding volunteering is, and I’ve been so inspired by the incredible things local people achieve through volunteering. From helping people through the cost of living crisis by running food banks, to litter picking in their local park, people across Denton and Reddish really have gone above and beyond.
I would encourage anyone who is interested to visit the Volunteering Week website, there are some fantastic resources and great volunteering ideas.”

** A Jubilee Celebration at St Anne's Primary School 👑
------------------------------------------------------------
A big thank you to St Anne's Primary School, Denton ([link removed]) for inviting me and Cllr ([link removed]) Allison ([link removed]) Gwynne ([link removed]) to their Jubilee Celebrations last week.
The children took us all on a journey through the decades of the Queen’s reign. I refuse to accept the Spice Girls are history, but apparently they are! I guess I’m getting old!!!
Another great local event to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, after brilliant visits to St John Fisher RC and Russell Scott Primary Schools last week. Thank you! 🇬🇧
** A beautiful service on Ascension Sunday ✝️
------------------------------------------------------------
Last weekend was Ascension Sunday and it was my pleasure to attend St Elisabeth’s Church in Reddish for Rev. Angie Stanton’s last Mass.
It was a beautiful and fitting service for a remarkable person who I’m proud to call my friend.
Angie leaves a lasting legacy with Re:dish ([link removed]) , a charity she helped to set up, and a renewed community spirit across the parts of Reddish she’s touched.
Here’s to a happy retirement!
** A Jubilee bonanza at the Worker Bee Market 🇬🇧 🐝
------------------------------------------------------------
Last Saturday, the sun was shining, and whilst out on an errand for my dad, Allison ([link removed]) and I dropped in to the Worker Bee Markets ([link removed]) at Broadstone Mill in Reddish. Another great event by Claire Simpson - and the biggest and best yet - for the Jubilee with well over 50 stalls.
It was great to see the Friends of Reddish South Station at the market. I’m working with them to get a proper rail service through this station (and Denton) to Manchester Victoria. And the brilliant Re:dish ([link removed]) were there too. They’re such a great charity in the heart of Reddish.
There was lots of craft, food and quirky goods stalls to browse. Well done to all the brilliant stalls and organisers.👏🏻
