Today is the first day of both Pride Month and Immigration Heritage Month! As a trans immigrant and asylum winner from Mexico, I’m doubly proud of who I am today.
From a very young age, I wanted to play with the boys, dress like them, and talk like them—because I was one of them. My mother did not accept my behavior and beat me for not acting like a girl.
As a teenager, I escaped to the U.S. to build a better life and create a family of my own. Immigration Equality helped me win asylum, and I never have to worry about being separated from my wife and son.
