John,
Wow, what a month. 😬 May 2022 may have set a new record for unwanted news since the decade began … and that’s really saying something, since the 2020s have been kind of a disaster so far.
So much happened last month (much of it terrible) that we decided to do a quick recap, because the issues raised in May were so important that we don’t want to risk them getting drowned out by the noise of the never-ending news cycle.
So, as June begins, let’s review what happened in May … then figure out how to fix it.
• On May 3, someone at the Supreme Court leaked a draft majority decision written by Justice Samuel Alito that would overturn Roe v. Wade and make abortion instantly illegal for millions of Americans.
(source: New York Times via Guttmacher Institute)
The reasoning used for the decision challenges the entire concept of a constitutional right to privacy, putting dozens of other landmark civil rights rulings at risk – including legal interracial and gay marriage and access to contraception.
• Senate Democrats tried to bring up legislation to save Roe by codifying it into federal law, but all 50 Republicans, joined by West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin, blocked the bill with a filibuster.

Meanwhile, Republican-governed states rushed to pass bans criminalizing abortion and prescribing harsh penalties for patients and doctors alike in case the draft ruling becomes law.
• Over the next two weekends, people all over the country took to the streets to protest the leaked draft ruling and the Senate’s failure to protect our right to choose.
The justices reacted by surrounding the Supreme Court with barricades and telling Americans they won’t be “bullied” into giving them “only the outcomes they want.”
• In the midst of all that, on May 14, an 18-year-old white man drove 3.5 hours from his hometown to Buffalo, NY, and killed 10 Black people in a grocery store with an AR-15 assault rifle. Three other people were injured.
He streamed the massacre live on social media and released a manifesto explaining that that he believed in the white-supremacist “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory and had targeted the grocery store because it was located in a zip code with a particularly high concentration of Black residents.
• Just over a week later, on May 24, a young man in Uvalde, Texas turned 18 and immediately (and legally) purchased two AR-15 assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition. He then went on a murderous rampage – shooting his grandmother in the face before entering the local elementary school, where he killed 19 young children and 2 teachers, and wounded 17 others, including 2 police officers.
It was later found that the Uvalde police stood outside for over an hour while the shooter roamed the halls of the school, and beat, handcuffed, and tased parents who tried to intervene.
• Just 3 days later, the NRA was scheduled to hold its annual convention in nearby Houston. Despite all but one musical guest, numerous speakers, and the manufacturer of the guns used in the Uvalde shooting pulling out of the event, the NRA doubled down and held the convention anyway, surrounded by thousands of angry protesters.
On stage, keynote speaker Donald Trump read through a list of the victims, misprounouncing many of their mostly Latino names before, bizarrely, dancing a happy little jig.

He also joined Ted Cruz and other Republican politicians in pledging to oppose common-sense gun safety reform proposals and attempting to sell the lie that the answer to stopping gun violence is to make sure more people are armed with guns.
So, yeah, May was one hell of a month.
Inspired by the impending loss of Roe v. Wade , we set an ambitious goal last month to raise a million dollars in May for the No Dem Left Behind Senate Fund so we can flip the seats we need to save Roe .
The senseless and horrific gun violence that followed was another stark reminder of just how important it is that we protect and expand our Senate majority in this year’s midterms.
We knew a million dollars was an ambitious target, but we also felt it was worth it to take our best shot at saving Roe and our other civil rights … not to mention finally doing something about gun violence.
Many of you agreed, and generously stepped up last month to give our Senate Fund a boost.
We’re so grateful for the generosity and commitment of those who pitched in to help us reach our goal, but we’re sorry to report that we didn’t quite get there by May’s end. So, if you haven’t donated yet (or even if you have, but could spare a little more), we really hope you’ll do so now – June is not too late for us to make a HUGE difference!

John, you know the stakes couldn’t be higher this election year.
Thanks to a Supreme Court stacked with hard-right religious zealots , if we don’t expand our Senate majority by at least 2 seats, we’re in real danger of losing our fundamental rights – to love, marry, and build our families however, whenever, and with whomever we choose – while Democrats nominally control the White House and both houses of Congress.
We can also forget about making progress on stopping gun violence, slowing down climate change, advancing civil rights, Building Back Better, or any of the other issues we care about as Democrats.
And if we lose control of the Senate? Things will be even worse than that.
So please, take a look around at the dumpster fire the last month has been, and realize that there’s just ONE way to stop this insanity from becoming the norm: We must SAVE THE SENATE and expand our majority by flipping more red seats blue .
