Dear John,

Happy Pride!

Pride has always been – and always will be – a protest against police brutality and oppressive systems. The bricks thrown in 1969 by Black & brown transgender women and sex workers continue to send a message that our existence can’t be erased, our lives and bodies can’t be legislated, and that white supremacy is a poison that must be eradicated if we are to achieve full liberation.

Pride will always be a protest.

The past few years have been difficult. We continue to endure a global pandemic that has disproportionately impacted poor people, disabled people, and people of color. We continue to see a rise in violence against transgender and gender non-conforming people, particularly Black transgender women. We’re seeing state legislatures, including Virginia’s, introduce legislation targeting some of the most marginalized in our community - transgender and non-binary youth.

And yet, through it all, we’re reminded that there is power in community. We’re reminded that we are stronger together. We’re reminded that none of us are alone.

Equality Virginia remains steadfast in our commitment to push back on the forces that try to keep us quiet. Loudly and boldly we say: Black Lives Matter. Black trans lives matter. Transgender and non-binary youth belong here.

We hope you’ll celebrate Pride by taking action with Equality Virginia:

  • Join us on June 8th from 6:00-7:00 pm for our Summer of Action Virtual Kick-Off . This summer, we’re hosting three months of sustained advocacy efforts to advance and defend equality across Virginia. At the kick-off event you’ll hear about volunteer opportunities, upcoming events, virtual trainings, and - most importantly - action steps. RSVP now!
  • Register to vote and elect pro-equality candidates.
  • Donate to our Safe Schools Campaign to fund critical work for the fight ahead and help provide resources, training, and more for transgender and non-binary advocates in every corner of our Commonwealth.

Be Proud. Take Action.

Yours In The Fight,

Equality Virginia Staff
