Everyone deserves access to lifesaving medical care, and for more than 50 years, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has worked to deliver that care to those who need it most—regardless of where they live, who they are, or who they love.

In the places we work around the world, our teams see that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) people are often marginalized and denied access to health care. Such was the case for Daniela, a 19-year-old trans woman from Guatemala.

Daniela was thrown out of her home as a child, and she was forced to perform sex work in order to survive. She endured perpetual abuse, deception, and degradation for several years before she found the courage to leave Guatemala for good. Eventually she made it to Mexico City, where MSF teams provided medical and mental health care.


Following her harrowing journey, Daniela is now safely resettled in Canada. But for countless other LGBTQI+ people around the world, the search for safety and acceptance is far from over. That's why at MSF we're proud to provide medical and psychological care without judgement to the people who need it most—regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity.
