The price of diesel has hit an average of about $5.50 a gallon, a new record and a 75% increase from a year ago, due to US policies banning imports from Russia and increasing exports to Europe, as well as lower US refining activity and inventories. Larger trucking companies are passing along the cost to consumers, but smaller operators are worried about possibly cutting service.
