Good morning,
Following last week's tragic shooting in Uvalde, Democrats are heightening calls for gun control. Some Republicans are playing right into their hands.
Here is the Texas Minute for Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

Two Republicans Join Democrats in Calls for Special Session
Following the tragic Uvalde massacre last week, where 19 school children and two teachers were murdered in their classroom by a deeply disturbed 18-year-old man, some Republican state lawmakers are joining Democrat calls for a special session of the Texas Legislature. Sydnie Henry [[link removed]] has the details.
A special session, which can last up to 30 days, can only be called by the governor and on topics of his choosing. Texas Democrats are demanding [[link removed]] a special session to enact “evidence-based, common sense gun safety laws.”
Among the Democrats' calls: raise the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21; require universal background checks for all firearm sales; implement "red flag" laws to allow the temporary removal of firearms from those who are an imminent danger to themselves or others; require a "cooling off" period for the purchase of a firearm; and regulate civilian ownership of high capacity magazines.
In the wake of the shooting, Republican State Rep. Jeff Leach (Allen) and Republican State Sen. Ken Seliger have also called for a special session.
Republican Party of Texas Chairman Matt Rinaldi, however, says it's a "terrible" idea.
"After El Paso, I had Republicans pushing me to support Red Flag laws & gun storage requirements that would solve nothing. I’ll pass on a 30 day Democrat fundraiser full of grandstanding and crying where the GOP plays defense & best case scenario is our rights stay intact.” –Matt Rinaldi
Republicans to Set Priorities
Speaking of Republicans, the Republican Party of Texas is slated to hold its convention from June 16-18 in Houston, where delegates will select the party's priorities. Katy Drollinger [[link removed]] explains the process.
Parents Confront School Board Over "Antiracism" Exercise
Parents recently showed up to a school board meeting in San Antonio's Northside ISD to voice opposition to an "antiracism" social experiment that divided children [[link removed]] according to hair color for an entire day. Teachers ensured light-haired children were mistreated and dark-haired children were praised as superior.
“A week later, the same group of fifth-graders [were] forced to watch a documentary containing gruesome autopsy photos of little girls that were killed in a bombing, displaying their breasts, their charred skin, and the remains of one little girl whose head was blown off by an explosion,” said one mother, Brandi Lininger, referring to a movie shown to students.
Lininger stated that her traumatized 10-year-old daughter had been unable to sleep in her own room because “she feared that she would have no control over the nightmares if she would fall asleep.” Nichole Reece [[link removed]] has a commentary from the board meeting.
Outlawing Abortion
If the United States Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, what would the decision mean for Texas? Would there be any need to outlaw abortion at the local level in a post-Roe Texas? Mark Lee Dickson [[link removed]], the director of Right to Life of East Texas, explains in a new commentary. 🔒 Donate to Texas Scorecard 🔒 [[link removed]] Today in History
