Friends,
As we close out Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I wanted to send a note to you to celebrate the many contributions of AAPI communities here in our district and across the country – and to commemorate and honor the specific experiences of the AAPI community during the pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on everyone, but that’s especially true for the disproportionate number of Asian-Americans who had to close down their small businesses or experience violent attacks simply because of their race. That’s why I was a proud cosponsor and supporter of relief for small business owners and the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, which was signed into law a year ago this month. Still, it’s clear: there is more work to be done to protect AAPI communities in Massachusetts and beyond.
So long after Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month comes to a close, I hope you’ll join me in continuing to reflect on how we as a community and a Commonwealth can be even more effective in supporting our AAPI neighbors and small businesses.
I’m heartened by what I’ve seen in our community over the past month and honored to be joined by my fellow Members of Congress who are prioritizing the experiences of the AAPI community. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to sign on to community-centered bills alongside my Asian-American colleagues in the House, and I plan to continue supporting these initiatives whenever they arise.
Thank you for taking the time to reflect on this month with me.
Sincerely,
Lori Trahan
