John, National Gun Violence Awareness Day is on Friday, June 3, 2022! In 2013 -- just one week after performing at former President Barack Obama's 2nd Inauguration -- 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed. On her birthday that year, her family and friends chose to wear orange, Hadiya's favorite color. In the years since, they have asked the nation to join them in wearing orange on the first Friday of June as a means of honoring all those whose lives have ended or been forever changed by gun violence. As the news cycle begins to move on after the horrific Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, we want to insist that attention stay--and meaningful legislative action begins--on this important issue. We'll be wearing orange on Friday, and we hope you'll join us. Here is how you can participate from anywhere in Wisconsin: - Email a picture of yourself wearing orange with a message about why you are wearing orange to [email protected] for us to share on social media. Or, share a picture on your own social media account and tag us @WaveEdFund on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!
If you live in or will be visiting the Milwaukee area, there are a few extra ways that you can participate: - Check out the places that are lighting up orange for National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 3rd. Send us a picture of these to share, too!
