Message from NARAL President Mini Timmaraju
Our hearts are still so very broken after the shocking shootings in Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, TX over the last two weeks—plus countless other incidents of gun violence that have shattered families, neighborhoods, and entire communities. We will be working with our allies in the gun violence prevention movement to connect our supporters to their efforts, and we look forward to sharing more with you soon.
While our nation mourns once again, we are also bracing for the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and unravel the constitutional right to abortion—as the Court’s leaked draft majority opinion from early May shows they are poised to do.
We expect 28 states to move to ban abortion completely once the Court issues its decision this summer. Of those, 13 states already have “trigger bans” in place, which would ban abortion automatically. Those bans will most harm people who already face barriers to accessing the care they need—Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and people of color—including members of the AAPI community whose heritage and contributions to the reproductive freedom movement we celebrate this month.
These bans will also have an outsized impact on people working to make ends meet, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, young people, those living in rural communities, and people with disabilities.
So, what do we do now? Remember, the midterms are in 161 days! NARAL members will be pulling out all of the stops to elect champions for reproductive freedom and hold politicians who put anti-choice extremism ahead of our rights and freedom accountable at the ballot box.
The work of our movement continues—with energy, outrage, and purpose. Tens of thousands of NARAL members have come forward to volunteer their time in the weeks since the Supreme Court leak, and I’d encourage you to join them today: [link removed]
With the midterms fast approaching, we need to send a crystal clear message: When you come for our rights, we’ll come for your seats.
