Friend, This summer, Colorado will come alive with the sound of the season: the buzzing of bees. But our bees need our help facing the dangers of habitat loss, climate change and toxic neonicotinoid pesticides, better known as neonics.1 One of the best things we can do to save our bees is to protect them from neonic pesticides at the state level. Our state's bees that work hard to pollinate our gardens and nourish local produce don't stand a chance against toxic neonics -- unless we ban the consumer sale of neonics in states across the country. More than 4,000 unique species of native bees call this country home, and the widespread use of neonics continues to put each species in jeopardy.2 These pesticides are neurotoxins, poisoning bees' brains and making it harder for bees to find food or even their way home.3 We need to protect Colorado's bees before it's too late. By campaigning for federal legislation like the Saving America's Pollinators Act and calling on retailers such as Amazon to end the sale of neonics, we're determined to save our pollinators. Banning the worst uses of neonics at the state level is a critical first step to saving bees across the country. The more state-level bans we can pass, the more momentum we'll build for sweeping federal legislation. Despite a decrease in the use of pesticides over the last decade, their toxic impact on bees has doubled due to new, far more dangerous uses of neonics.4 In the last year, Massachusetts, Maine, New York and New Jersey have all banned the consumer sale of neonics. The more states that end the worst uses of neonics, the more momentum we'll have for sweeping federal legislation to protect bees across America. We're working to protect bees across the country, but right now we have the opportunity to protect the bees that call our state home. Urge our governor to ban the consumer sale of neonics to save Colorado's bees. Thank you for taking action, Rex Wilmouth |
