Dear John,
Kitten Season—it's just as cute as it sounds, but it also means there are scores of homeless kittens coming to PAWS every week. We have to find them homes quickly, or we won't be able to continue making room for so many more throughout the summer kitten boom. The consequences can be devastating.
That's why the start of kitten season is always an urgent call to our caring community of fosters and volunteers, plus outreach to potential adopters. On May 23 we did just that when the annual Summer Kitten Adoption Challenge officially launched.
It's sadly so predictable: When the weather warms up, there's an influx of mother cats and their litters, and it continues throughout the warm summer months.
PAWS is asking the Chicago community to help us reach a lifesaving goal of 350 kittens adopted before August 31.
And what’s better than one adorable kitten? Two of them!
We ask adopters of kittens under 12 weeks to either have a current resident cat or adopt two kittens at the same time. Having a buddy to continue growing, learning, and socializing with ensures a kitten’s success in the home.
Kitten season can also bring new spring faces to your own neighborhood, and when you see kittens alone outside, you may wonder what you can do to help. A resource guide for community members who find a litter of newly born kittens is available here, and for kittens who require bottle feeding, read here.

Albany's Fight for Survival
10 weeks. That’s how old little Albany was when she was found abandoned with deep cuts on her body that indicated she had been dragged from a moving vehicle.
After that cruelty, she was left on the side of the road, dehydrated and hungry. A Good Samaritan found her there and brought her straight to PAWS, where she was rushed into emergency surgery.
Despite such a brutal act, Albany will be okay. Her trust in people surprisingly hasn’t wavered, and she continues to wag her tail and give lots of kisses.
While we don’t know all the details of Albany’s traumatic past, we can happily say the rest of her days will be filled with love and care.
Albany is currently recovering from her injuries and is very much a typical young puppy: sweet, cuddly, and playful. She will be available for adoption soon, and we are so thankful to have been part of her journey to a brand new start in life!

For the Love of Biscuit
The pets who spend a lifetime loving us never really leave us. In case you need proof, here's some that borders on the miraculous.
In 2009, Biscuit was adopted from PAWS Chicago. Her time at PAWS was brief, but she went on to spend over a decade going on adventures, making memories, and being surrounded by love from her adoring family.
When Biscuit unexpectedly passed away at home it was a tough loss for their family, who didn't get a chance to say their goodbyes. While the family was scattering her ashes in her favorite place, Biscuit sent them a sign that she would always be there for them. For a brief moment, her ashes took the shape of her unmistakable profile as they took off in the wind.
“It felt like a final send-off. A sign that she’s alright and has moved on. A proper goodbye,” said Natalie Larason, Biscuit’s adopter.
Thank you to Natalie and the Larason family for sharing their story with us! See the amazing photo and more from Newsweek on the link below.

Lillian's Sweet 16
At 16 years old, Lillian was homeless, sick, and stuck at the city shelter. Overlooked time and time again because of her age, this kitty desperately needed our help. PAWS happily welcomed Lillian into our program and, after some TLC at the Medical Center, we helped her find the family she always deserved. Now, this purr machine is enjoying life with her completely smitten parents, Sam and John Fletcher.
