VP Harris Pushes to Prohibit Assault Weapons

Fox News: Vice President Kamala Harris called for a ban on “assault weapons” on Saturday after she spoke at the funeral of a woman killed in the Buffalo, New York grocery store mass shooting earlier this month. She called the firearm a “weapon of war” that has “no place in civil society.” “We are not sitting around waiting to figure out what the solution looks like. You know, we’re not looking for a vaccine. We know what works on this,” she told reporters outside of Air Force Two at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, referring to the series of mass shootings that have plagued the U.S. “Let’s have an assault weapons ban” (Fox News). Townhall: So while most Democrats have targeted what they call “assault weapons” in the wake of the mass shooting, Biden appears to be setting his sights on handguns, too, which isn’t the first time he’s singled out one of the most popular firearms in America (Townhall).

Canada Floats Aggressive Gun Control Legislation

From the story: New gun control legislation the federal government tabled today includes a national freeze on the purchase, sale, importation and transfer of handguns in Canada. The government also is pledging to start buying back thousands of banned assault weapons before the end of the year. While the proposal falls short of a full ban on handguns, it would effectively limit their number in Canada (CBC). CPAC: “It will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada. In other words, we’re capping the market for handguns,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says at a news conference in Ottawa as he outlines government’s new gun control bill (CPAC). Daily Wire: Trudeau’s remarks come after Democrat President Joe Biden appeared to take aim at handguns Monday on Memorial Day, claiming that a 9mm bullet, which is the most popular handgun caliber, “blows the lung out of the body” (Daily Wire).

Biden Taking Steps to Forgive $10,000 in Student Debt

Washington Post: White House officials are currently planning to cancel $10,000 in student debt per borrower, after months of internal deliberations over how to structure loan forgiveness for tens of millions of Americans, three people with knowledge of the matter said. The White House’s latest plans called for limiting debt forgiveness to Americans who earned less than $150,000 in the previous year, or less than $300,000 for married couples filing jointly, two of the people said. It was unclear whether the administration will simultaneously require interest and payments to resume at the end of August, when the current pause is scheduled to lapse (Washington Post). Business Insider: One potential problem involves targeting debt relief based on a borrower’s income. That would compel the Department of Education to verify a person’s identity and income to determine whether they qualify under a relief program. But the Education Department doesn’t have that information on hand for borrowers. The Internal Revenue Service holds that data for many taxpayers, but it’s barred from sharing it with other federal agencies and private businesses (Business Insider). National Review: This is illegal, and Biden knows it. The executive branch has no generalized power to forgive any amount of student debt for debt-holders of any income group. Asked about the idea last year, Nancy Pelosi confirmed simply that “the president can’t do it. That’s not even a discussion.” Do you know how patently illegal something has to be for Nancy Pelosi to acknowledge it’s illegal? The Department of Education came to the same verdict, determining that the executive branch “does not have the statutory authority to cancel, compromise, discharge, or forgive, on a blanket or mass basis, principal balances of student loans, and/or to materially modify the repayment amounts or terms thereof” (National Review).

Activist Attempts to Vandalize Mona Lisa in Name of Climate Change

Associated Press: A man seemingly disguised as an old woman in a wheelchair threw a piece of cake at the glass protecting the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum and shouted at people to think of planet Earth. The Paris prosecutor’s office said Monday that the 36-year-old man was detained following Sunday’s incident and sent to a police psychiatric unit. An investigation has been opened into the damage of cultural artifacts. Security guards were filmed escorting the wig-wearing man away as he called out to the surprised visitors in the gallery: “Think of the Earth! There are people who are destroying the Earth! Think about it. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did this” (Associated Press). TalkTV: A climate protester, who visited the Louvre, disguised as an old lady jumped out of a wheelchair before trying to smash the glass protecting the world’s most famous painting (Mona Lisa) and then smeared cream across its surface (Twitter). RedState: Although the climate alarmism movement already struggles to be taken seriously, this demonstration does not do them any favors. This activist should be glad that he did not get the chance to destroy the glass and damage the painting because he probably would have set his cause back years in terms of public support. Many are already concerned that left-wing activists are attacking the classical culture, so a man literally going after the world’s most famous work of art only reaffirms the suspicion (RedState).

BLM Responds to Biden’s Police Reforms With Tweets Deriding Law Enforcement

From the story: The radical activist group Black Lives Matter railed against the “white supremacist” institution of “policing,” decrying its roots in “racism” and “slave patrolling,” while attacking politicians who support “our killers,” in a series of tweets Thursday following President Joe Biden’s signing of an executive order on policing reforms (Breitbart). BLM: Maintaining a white supremacist institution like policing costs Black lives. This continued commitment by politicians to support our killers makes them accessories to our demise (Twitter).

Biological Male Cyclist Claims Men Have No Competitive Advantage Against Women

From the story: Biological male transgender cyclist Emily Bridges said in an interview this week that there is “no advantage” for biological males competing against biological females. Bridges reportedly made the remarks in an interview with United Kingdom-based LGBTQ+ publication Diva Magazine (Townhall). Road: Bridges, selected to participate in British Cycling’s senior academy in 2019, is a former junior men’s record holder in the 25 mile time trial and in February won her final race in a male event at the BUCS track championships. Speaking of her exclusion from the National Omnium Championships, she said: “Everything was kicking off saying, ‘Oh, she’s gonna race and she’s gonna beat Laura Kenny’. “I don’t know why they’re thinking that. I wasn’t doing that well. “It’s like they automatically think I’m gonna beat a multiple Olympic champion, just because I’m trans” (Road).

Teacher Utilizes Unapproved LGBT Flash Cards to Teach Preschoolers

Daily Wire: A preschool teacher in a North Carolina public school taught colors to her three and four-year-old students using LGBT flash cards which included a picture of a pregnant man (Daily Wire). Daily Mail: The teacher, who has not been identified, was found out to have used them on the preschoolers after a constituent of State Representative Erin Pare contacted the Republican about the cards at Ballantine Elementary School in Wake County. Paré contacted the principal of the school to see if she was aware of the use of the cards, which showcase LGBTQ relationships and also go through what each of the colors in the Pride Flag mean (Daily Mail). News Observer: Paré, a Wake County Republican, praised the principal for quickly removing the flash cards. “I am grateful that a concerned constituent reached out and that this issue is being addressed in a swift and professional manner by Ballentine Elementary School,” Paré said in the news release. “Schools should only be using age-appropriate materials, and these flashcards clearly do not meet that standard for a pre-school classroom. I hope schools across Wake County and the State of North Carolina will follow the example of Ballentine and respond swiftly when a parent expresses concern and ensure that materials like this are not being used to teach young students” (News Observer).

Harvard Poll: Only 6.4 Percent of Graduating Students Identify as Conservative

Fox News: The survey, conducted by The Crimson, was emailed to all 1,269 graduating seniors and drew a nearly 40% response rate. It found that 4% of graduates from the class of 2022 lean conservative, and 2.4% lean “very conservative.” It also surveyed the students about what their politics were before attending Harvard and found that 7.1% of the graduating class identified as conservative before attending the college. Among the results: 40.7% of the students identified as progressive after attending Harvard, compared to 44.7% prior to attending the college. 27.9% of graduating students identify as “very progressive,” which is an increase from the 20.9% who said they were “very progressive” prior to attending the college (Fox News).

European Union to Pursue Oil Embargo on Russia by Year End

Wall Street Journal: The European Union said for the first time that it would impose an oil embargo on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, taking a big step forward in an economic fight against Moscow that is already reverberating in global markets. The embargo would include an exemption for oil delivered from Russia via pipelines, an amount that makes up one-third of EU oil purchases from the country. EU officials said that by the end of the year, the embargo would cover 90% of previous Russian oil imports (Wall Street Journal).

710 Freeway Expansion Planned for Decades Scrapped Due to Impact on People of Color

From the story: The freeway and the working-class communities’ ills became a potent symbol of a larger effort playing out across the state: to stop freeways that shape, divide and hurt neighborhoods, especially those where people of color live. The Times found that more than 200,000 people nationwide have lost their homes because of federal road projects over three decades. The largest recent highway expansions, including in California, have forced out residents in Black and Latino neighborhoods at a disproportionately high rate. Black and Latino residents make up an estimated 83% of the 1.2 million people who live along the 710 corridor. They endure some of the worst air quality in the country. The area accounts for about 20% of all particulate emissions in Southern California, according to Metro (Los Angeles Times). Breitbart: Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has drawn criticism for his claim that much of America’s infrastructure is “racist” because it affected or isolated minority communities, pointing to planners like New York’s Robert Moses. The cancelation of the 710 expansion comes in the midst of a supply chain crisis in which one of the limiting factors has been the difficulty of moving trucks in and out of port facilities with shipping containers at Los Angeles and Long Beach (Breitbart).
