We’ve just announced the next steps in our work to ease the cost of living, with further action on supermarkets. I wanted to send a quick update to make sure you’d heard about these changes, which will make sure you’re getting a fairer deal at the checkout.
We know New Zealanders are fed up with paying a premium for everyday items, while supermarkets rake in $1 million a day in excess profits. These high prices are driven by the lack of competition in the grocery industry, so we’re taking a range of actions to tackle the issue.
Here’s how we’re making sure supermarkets are playing fair:
- We’re appointing a grocery watchdog to make sure supermarkets are being honest.
- We’re making it easier for new competitors to enter the market, by opening up access to wholesale goods at a fair price.
- We’re launching a mandatory code of conduct for supermarkets.
- We’re introducing compulsory unit pricing on grocery products, making it easier for consumers to compare prices.
Together, these changes will help to fix our supermarket sector, and ensure people are paying a fair price at the checkout. They come on top of our recent work to stop supermarket “land wars”, where supermarkets block competitors from setting up shop in certain suburbs.

Given the pressure New Zealanders are under due to global inflation and cost of living increases, we can’t afford to wait to make these changes. That’s why we’re taking stronger action than the Commerce Commission proposed, to make our grocery sector more competitive and ensure consumers are paying fairer prices.
This is another way we’re stepping up to support New Zealanders, and builds on all the work we've done to help low and middle income families.
