John —
Today and every day, we remember those who have fallen in the line of duty defending our freedoms. As a U.S. Army veteran myself, Memorial Day carries a special place in my heart.
I’m reminded of the brave soldiers who paved the way before me and those who fought for our democracy so that we may be free. I am proud to be part of a community of veterans who had the honor of duty and service to our country.

For me, joining the military was my ticket out of a life of poverty and insecurity. At 17 years old, my parents signed an age waiver so I could attend West Point. Never could I imagine the experience would someday grant me the opportunity to run for Congress.
As long as we are sending Americans to fight in wars, our country must uphold our part of the bargain in taking care of those who risk everything to serve. If elected, I am committed to being an advocate for veterans who do not have a voice — from increasing funding for the VA to strengthening supportive services in housing, jobs, education, and healthcare.
As a nation, we are forever grateful for the sacrifices of our fallen heroes throughout American history. Let’s build on the promise of a better future for our children and grandchildren.
I hope you have a special day with your friends, family, and loved ones.
