John,

I want to take a moment to honor the fallen US soldiers who have fought for our freedom since the American Revolution. Because of their courageous service, we enjoy the liberty, democracy, and representation of the United States today.

Today is a day to reflect upon the sacrifices that brave women and men in uniform have made for our country since its inception. It's also a day to have in our hearts the stories of Gold Star families, who have dealt with the loss of loved ones with grace and tenacity.

From the forces that rose against a tyrannical king under the command of George Washington to our parents and grandparents who made the ultimate sacrifice during the first and second World Wars, people young and old have answered the call to service — and many never made it home.

So I hope you can spend some time today — even just a few minutes — to pay homage to the men and women who laid down their lives so that we, as a nation, could rise.
