Friend,

Memorial Day isn't just a day off from school or work – it's a day dedicated to remembering and honoring those who gave their lives fighting for our country.

Today, our nation takes a moment to honor the patriotic Americans who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Because of their sacrifice and commitment, my grandma was able to survive World War II, immigrate to the U.S., and become the proudest American citizen you could’ve ever met. Because of that sacrifice and commitment, my family and I have the privilege of living in a world where we are granted the freedoms we share as Americans.

Showing gratitude for those who are no longer with us is important. But I think honoring those we've lost should extend beyond just today. In addition to honoring their sacrifices, we also need to show an appreciation for the freedoms they died for.

This Memorial Day, we should all be conscious of the fact that military action often comes at a significant price. That means America needs a smart, strategic approach to foreign policy. It means that when military action occurs, our nation needs to provide the training and equipment our service members need. It means we must do everything we can to bring each service member home safely.

I hope you’ll join me in commemorating the brave Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice. Today, we honor the fallen and rededicate ourselves to protecting those who currently serve and the veterans who are still here, making us proud every single day.

It's an honor to represent you,

Derek Kilmer
