Today is Memorial Day – a day to honor Americans who lost their lives in service to the country, who answered the call to duty and gave the last full measure of devotion.

This day has special meaning for all Americans, but it is particularly difficult for the family and friends of our fallen soldiers. Today is a day to thank those who put our nation’s security before their safety. We must support the loved ones they left behind.

My father served in World War II; my husband served in peacetime in the Navy; my brother was a veteran of the Vietnam War. I know firsthand the immense sacrifices they and their families have made for our country – that is why we must take today to express the gratitude of a thankful nation.

We must also continue to support our veterans – who still bear the scars of war. Let us extend a kind word today but a helping hand tomorrow.
