John, as the daughter of a Coastguardsman and the mother of a U.S. Marine veteran, Memorial Day is especially close to my heart.

I remember those sleepless nights when my son was serving tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the deep relief when he ultimately returned home safely. But too many families were not so lucky.

As we gather together today in honor of Memorial Day, let’s remember all those young men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Think about their families and loved ones who share a loss that can’t be filled. We are forever indebted to their bravery and courage.

Let’s also renew our commitment to taking care of our servicemembers, on and off the battlefield.

So I hope you’re able to spend today holding loved ones close, and remembering those who sacrificed for our freedom.
