At a time when our country faces challenges that threaten the very fabric of who we are as a nation, I believe that Memorial Day offers an important time to reflect. Solemn occasions of commemoration like this one can be illuminating because we are afforded the opportunity to seek inspiration from the most selfless our country has ever known. We look to their grit. We ask ourselves what they would tell us and how they would ask us to defend the freedom they gave their last breath fighting to protect. While they are no longer here to share what they learned in person, their stories leave us with lasting lessons that are especially important in times where our country is challenged with adversity. So, this Memorial Day, I hope you’ll remember these fallen heroes. We all have somebody from our hometown, or from a school that we went to, or from our own families, or from our own time in service who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the Stars and Stripes. Let’s remember their names, talk about their bravery and pass these stories down to our kids. May they and their family members be in our prayers as we remember, honor and celebrate their bravery. God bless our troops and God bless America, SSG Brian Mast, U.S. Army (ret.)
