We are all deeply saddened & shaken by what happened in Buffalo & then just 10 days later, the terrible tragedy in Texas and while we are all shocked, this nation has no right to be surprised.

This is not a crisis in America, it is a crisis about America.

Public safety is Job 1 for government and failing to ban the deadly assault rifles used in both of these mass shootings is an epic failure of political courage, or competence, or both.

It’s not that we don’t know what needs to be done, because we’ve done it before.

In 1994 President Clinton & Senate Leader George Mitchell passed an assault weapons ban and a 10 bullet limit with a vote of 52 – 48. That was in place for ten years. Was it hard, yes. Was there a political cost, yes.

But if we could do it in 1994 why don’t we do it now?

Now is the time for action, not fear, from Washington.

I shared my thoughts on this critically important junction in our history today with congregants of the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn. You can watch it above. I thank them and my friend, Senior Pastor Dr. Rev. A. R. Bernard for inviting me to join him and the CCC family.

Let us seize the moment.

Let us take our outrage and pain and channel it as a positive force, demanding government action. Let us demand common sense gun reform. Let us demand that our government fights these racists groups as the terrorists they are.

Let us demand that they do it now.

Let us learn and make this moment a moment of progress.
