 Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day honors all soldiers who died during service to our country.
U.S. Representative John A. Logan, elected as a Democrat in November 1858 (a staunch defender of the Union) believed Memorial Day should occur when flowers are in full bloom across the country. He influenced the original date selected by Congress in 1888 that made May 30 a holiday in the District of Columbia.
Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by Congress in 1971, and observances originate in the Civil War era. Until World War I, Civil War soldiers were solely honored on this holiday. Now Memorial Day is observed as the last Monday of May and all Americans who’ve served are honored.
The National Moment of Remembrance Act (signed into law by Congress and the President in 2000) encourages Americans to pause at 3 PM local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence. Please join me on Monday wherever you are to reflect on the sacrifice so many have made for our benefit and future generations.
