John – In the wake of multiple, horrifying mass shootings, pressure is mounting on the U.S. Senate to finally do something about gun safety.
Unfortunately the Senate is a dumpster of dysfunction, and multiple efforts to address our national gun sickness have been aggressively shut down.
Right now the Senate is sitting on not one but TWO gun reform bills passed by the House last year.
The Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021 and the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021 both easily passed the House in 2021, but neither bill has enough support to overcome a filibuster in the Senate.
And this week, a new domestic terorrism bill targeting white supremacists like the Buffalo terrorist failed for the same reason.
So instead of abolishing the filibuster, or calling for a floor vote to make every Senator go on record days after a spate of deadly mass shootings, the Senate just...went on vacation.
As long as the filibuster stands, we won’t have gun safety; we won’t protect abortion rights; we won’t secure voting rights; we won’t pass Build Back Better; we won’t stop the climate crisis, and we won’t guarantee healthcare for all.
In the flurry of reporting the last few days, people have easily lost track of the fact we’ve had multiple mass shootings in the span of a week.
If you would like to support the families of those murdered in the recent shootings, as well as the survivors who now have tremendous trauma and medical needs, we’ve compiled a few resources below through verified GoFundMe fundraisers.
Support the victims of the racist hate attack targeting Black supermarket shoppers in Buffalo, NY >>
Support the victims of the anti-Asian hate attack at the Taiwanese church in Laguna Woods, CA >>
Support the victims of the Robb Elementary School massacre in Uvalde, TX >>
Dismantling the dysfunction of the United States Senate is no easy project, John. Giant multinational corporations and their billionaire owners have a deeply vested interest in keeping things the way they are.
BNC is actively working on electing progressive senators who won’t bow down to the gun lobby or any other corporate interest, and we’re up against huge dark money groups who spend unlimited sums to keep their puppets in power.
It’s going to take years to build the infrastructure needed to run and win multiple viable Senate campaigns. But it is our best path to lasting change.
You can help this year by splitting a contribution between Brand New Congress and Charles Booker’s bold campaign to oust Rand Paul.

Unlike the U.S. Senate, Brand New Congress didn’t go on vacation this week. We’ve got too much work to do.
