Weekend Reading

Dear John,

In times like these, we are especially grateful for your support. Thank you for your gifts, your participation in calls to action, your activism in our connected communities, and the values of peace, justice, and equality you help uphold. We couldn’t do this work without you.

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

End Title 42 and restore the right to claim asylum : [link removed] For the past two years, immigrants have been stopped from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border to apply for asylum in the U.S. The Biden administration announced it would end this inhumane policy. But last week, a federal court ordered the administration to keep the order in place—and now Congress is considering legislation to extend these restrictions. Tell elected officials to block attempts to reinstate Title 42 today.

In response to AFSC lawsuit, the city of Orange, California releases records of police weaponry: [link removed] “Orange’s disclosure of records of military gear used by police in response to our litigation shows that all cities and counties need to be transparent,” says AFSC’s John Lindsay-Poland. “It is important for community members to understand just how militarized law enforcement has become.” Read more in our “Equipped for War” report [link removed] . Why we're collecting stories of military recruiter abuses: [link removed] Military recruiters work in schools and our communities to get young people to sign up for the military. They often target low-income students and students of color for enlistment. In some cases, military recruiters abuse their power. We've seen an uptick in people reaching out about the harm caused to young people by recruiters. That's why we've reopened the Military Recruiter Abuse Hotline [link removed] .

It's time to end the death penalty : [link removed] In a ruling this week, the Supreme Court made it even harder for people on death row to challenge their convictions due to ineffective legal counsel. Bad representation is only one of many reasons wrongful convictions occur, including racial bias, coerced confessions, and police or prosecutorial misconduct. AFSC opposes the court ruling and calls for an end to the death penalty once and for all.

Urge Congress to speak out against Israel’s demolition of Palestinian communities: [link removed] Earlier this month, Israel’s highest court approved the forced eviction of eight Palestinian communities in the West Bank. Under the ruling, over 1,000 residents will be displaced from their homes. And the villages of Jinba, al Fakhit, Halaweh, Mirkez, Tabban, Maghayir al Abeed, and Isfey will be demolished. Tell your representatives to speak out today!
