Statement on the Uvalde School Shooting

Dear John,

In these United States of America, no child should be afraid to go to school. No senior citizen should be afraid to go to the grocery store. No American should be afraid to go to a concert, their place of worship, a nightclub or a shopping mall. Democrats and Republicans need to stand together and come up with a commonsense approach to gun legislation to keep our communities safe and prevent the senseless and heartbreaking tragedies that are becoming the norm.

We need to start treating gun violence as the deadly public health crisis it is.

Wreath Laying at Arlington National Cemetery in honor of Memorial Day

In honor of Memorial Day, I recently joined my colleagues at Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath at the grave of General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing. He remains the highest ranked military officer buried at Arlington National Cemetery and is a solemn reminder to remember our nation’s fallen heroes.

Today, and every day, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend American freedom. We will never forget.

2022 Congressional Art Competition Winners

Congratulations to all the winners of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition! Every year I look forward to seeing the outstanding artwork created by our district’s young artists, and every year I am blown away by their talent. This competition reflects how the arts continue to thrive in our schools, and I appreciate the dedication of our art educators who encourage creativity and exploration every day.

Julia Poncavage, a senior at Crestwood High School, won first place for her oil painting titled Visions of Blue. Her artwork will represent Pennsylvania’s Eighth Congressional District in Washington where it will hang in a highly trafficked area of the Capitol along with the winners from across the United States to be viewed by Members of Congress, distinguished guests, visitors and tourists. 

Other awardees: Theodore Brown from Wilkes-Barre Area High School Creative and Performing Arts Academy received second place, Mackenzie Grems from Dunmore High School received third place and Grace Czankner from Dunmore High School received honorable mention.

Lowering Health Care Costs

While serving in Congress, a top priority of mine is to lower health care costs. That’s why I’ve joined over two dozen of my fellow members of Congress in sending a letter to leadership urging them to include provisions to permanently lower the cost of health care in upcoming reconciliation legislation. 

We must continue to ensure that every American has access to high-quality, affordable health care.
