** Biggest Jubilee celebrations in Greater Manchester 👑 ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------

A four-day festival of Platinum Jubilee celebrations will take place across Oldham from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June and we’re proud to say it’s the largest set of events taking place in Greater Manchester.

As well as more than 230 street parties being funded in neighbourhoods across the borough, we have festivities beginning on Thursday 2 June with an illuminated spectacle as 70 local torchbearers parade through the centre of town before arriving at Oldham Parish Church to take part in the lighting of a Jubilee beacon.

On Friday, residents can relive the Queen’s Coronation in full as Oldham Parish Church hosts a special documentary titled ‘A Queen is Crowned’ on the big screen and over the weekend Oldham town centre will be taken over by a range of free outstanding local, national and international street artists, music, theatre and dance performances.

This comes as part of the borough’s 25th Festival Oldham event which this year is inspired by all things Jubilee, as well as Oldham’s connections with the Commonwealth. Events will be scattered around the centre of Oldham, including Parliament Square, the High Street, Gallery Oldham and Oldham Library.

Oldham Council has a new Leader

Putting you first is the aim of Oldham Council's new Leader, Amanda Chadderton, who was formally appointed at the Annual Council meeting that took place earlier this week.

As Leader, Cllr Chadderton says her firm focus will be delivering priorities across three key areas – continuing Oldham's drive to be a resident-focused council; ensuring plans for regeneration and housing continue at pace; and working for our children and young people by affording them the very best opportunities.

A new Cabinet was also formally appointed at the meeting.

Brilliant bunting

A ‘Royal Mile’ of bunting has been designed by primary schools in Oldham to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Creative pupils at schools across the borough were tasked with decorating 20 metres of bunting, as part of the Oldham Big Bunting project.

With the support of Oldham Council and Oldham Play Action Group, pupils were provided with bunting, materials, design templates and other Jubilee-themed resources to help with their decorations.

Buntings from across the borough were then combined and are now on display in Oldham town centre in readiness for the borough’s Platinum Jubilee festival over the extended bank holiday weekend.

In one of her first visits as the new Leader of Oldham Council, Councillor Amanda Chadderton visited Bare Trees Primary School in Chadderton to meet some of the children who had taken part in making the bunting. Read more on this great story here ([link removed]) .

We’re putting together a suicide prevention strategy ([link removed]) and we want your views on what should be included to protect Oldham residents from suicide and self-harm.

The feedback survey closes on 30 May so please take this last chance to let us know your views.

Action taken against fly tippers

As part of our Don’t Trash Oldham campaign we’ve recently prosecuted two people after rubbish was found dumped in the borough.
* Waste found on Cummings St, Hollins was traced to Chantelle McNally, formerly of Moorcroft St, Hollinwood. She appeared in court and had to pay £432 in fines and costs.
* Sophie Pountley, of Sharples Hall Road, Waterhead pleaded guilty in court to a duty of care offence after not disposing of her waste correctly. The waste was found dumped in an alley near her home. She was ordered to pay a fine of £200 and costs of £200.

In another case a resident was given a £100 fixed penalty notice after rubbish was found in an alleyway off Norman Street, Northmoor.

Since we started the enforcement and clean-up campaign last September more than 350 people have been fined for environmental crimes.

Next stop for the Don't Trash Oldham team

In June Oldham Council staff will start tidying up streets, roads and alleyways in Saddleworth and Lees as part of the Don’t Trash Oldham campaign.

They’ll be carrying out a deep clean of the area removing all the litter, rubbish, fly-tipping and overgrown shrubbery they find – because no one wants to live in a tip.

Since the council started the campaign in September their staff have cleaned up more than 172 tonnes of litter, rubbish, fly-tipping and overgrown shrubs and cleaned more than 2,500 streets and alleys.

The council have fined 352 people for environmental crimes.
