John,

My emotions are still raw from the horrible tragedy in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday. But before I share more of my thoughts, I want to be absolutely clear on three concrete steps the Senate can take to curb gun violence:

1. Gun licensing
2. Universal background checks
3. An assault weapons ban

Here are the facts: An 18 year old gunman bought two assault rifles and ammunition, and shot and killed nineteen children, all between the ages of 9 and 11 years old, and two teachers.

Here’s another: You need a driver’s license to buy a car, but not a weapon of war. That has to change.

The Senate must act. Add your name to my petition supporting mandatory federal gun licensing, universal background checks, and an assault weapons ban. This petition will not ask for any donation after submission — I am simply trying to get as many people as possible to take action to show my colleagues the American people are demanding change. If children are not safe at school, then Congress is failing its most basic constitutional duty.

We’re telling our children loud and clear that we will not protect you so we’re going to teach you to hide.

This is unacceptable and outrageous. It’s time to hold accountable Mitch McConnell and my Senate Republican colleagues who’ve stood in the way of common-sense gun violence prevention measures with a vote in the Senate. To allow inaction as our children are slaughtered is the height of cowardice.

In our nation, gun violence has become eerily routine, and we’ve done almost nothing at the federal level to stop the epidemic of gun violence that devastates the lives of victims and their loved ones.

Accepting this shameful status quo will continue to lead to deadly consequences. We need to adopt proven, common-sense measures that will address the scourge of gun violence and make our communities safer.

We are the only developed nation that deals almost daily with the tragedy of gun violence at this scale. When will enough be enough?

Children went to school on Tuesday and were killed in a mass shooting. Another American community shattered by gun violence. Another round of thoughts and prayers. They’re hollow words if we continue to do nothing to end the violent, unrelenting, preventable shootings in our country.

Enough. This kind of carnage in our nation is not inevitable. We have the power to change this. We cannot normalize, tolerate, or accept this. We must hold those accountable who have the power but are refusing to support real substantive gun reform that Americans want.

And let me tell you something else — the idea that the solution to this crisis is to “harden our schools” is nothing more than shameful surrender to impotency. Their “solution” is to turn our schools into military bunkers. It is a distraction, nothing more.

The real solution is to do something about the easy access to guns for those intent to kill. How many more children must be sacrificed on the altar of our inaction until we actually do something?

Those calling for more shelter in place training, or armed teachers, or more guns, are part of the problem, not the solution.

At the Parkland shooting, a school resource officer arrived within 99 seconds of the first shot fired, but 21 people had already been shot by then.

Aaron Salter, the retired police officer who gave his life defending grocery store patrons during the Buffalo shooting, was unable to stop the assailant with his gun because the shooter was wearing tactical gear and body armor.

We must hold politicians accountable who refuse to do their jobs and save lives and protect our children. Over 80% of Americans support universal background checks for firearm sales, and over 70% support gun licensing laws.

We do not need to arm teachers; we need to make laws that make it harder for would-be killers to commit mass murders with military grade weapons. It is time to act.

Add your name to my petition calling on the Senate to take up legislation to require gun licensing, universal background checks, and an assault weapons ban. Let’s have as many people as possible sign on — if you’re reading this now, I’m humbly asking you to add your name and join our effort. [[link removed]]
