TRIGGER WARNING: This email contains depictions of gun violence.
John,
As I am sure you are aware, earlier this week a man walked into an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas and opened fire, killing 21 innocent people — 19 students and 2 teachers. Just under 2 weeks ago, another 10 innocent lives were taken in a racially motivated supermarket shooting.
I am past the point of civil words when it comes to the repeated preventable mass shootings in this country. This year alone there have been 27 school shootings and over 200 mass shootings — we are only in May.
I am tired of spineless politicians sending “thoughts and prayers” to the victims of these tragedies, when they are the ones that hold the power to implement gun reform legislation. Condolences are not enough, we need to take action.
This should not be a politicized issue, it is not a matter of left or right, it is a matter of life or death. It seems that today’s politicians' only priority is an ideological quest for power, rather than protecting the safety of our population.
I want to make it clear that this is not about those who enjoy hunting or who safely store firearms in their home for protection. This is about a society that embraces a “guns, guns, guns'' mentality. Guns are everywhere and extremely accessible, unfortunately at the expense of way too many innocent lives.
“Enough” has become TOO MUCH. Teachers should not have to fear for their lives when they go to work. Parents shouldn't be afraid to send their kids to school. Students should feel safe in their learning environment. You shouldn’t have to walk through this world with the worry that at any moment you could be the victim of the next mass shooting.
My heart is with the communities of Uvalde and Buffalo as they heal from these tragedies. Together, we can amplify the fight for comprehensive gun reform.
