Delegates,
As the co-chairs of the Platform Committee, we are writing to inform you that on Saturday, May 21, the committee convened and voted unanimously to recommend the 2022 Indiana Republican Party platform draft, with 29 of 33 members present. We would like to thank all the members of the committee for the time they dedicated to attending our public hearings across the state to listen to the thoughts and ideas from Hoosier Republicans, as well as for the time they spent reviewing submitted testimony. With this input, committee members worked diligently to craft a document that clearly states what we believe in and stand for and that we believe will guide our party forward.
If there is one thing that we heard throughout our public hearings, it was that the 2018 Indiana Republican Party platform was a good document. Bearing that in mind, we worked around its edges, restructuring it slightly, and adding a few sections on important topics that were discussed at our public hearings and in written testimony.
Here are a few changes we want to highlight:
- We strengthened our core beliefs of “free, fair, and transparent elections” and “legal immigration and the rule of law."
- We strengthened our language on the sanctity of life and voiced our support for the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
-
We added a subsection on “Working Hoosiers” under our renamed “A Party for All” section, recognizing the important inroads that President Donald Trump made with working Hoosiers across the state.
-
We updated our “Republican Policy Initiatives” section to highlight past accomplishments of Republicans and re-focused on six key areas: 1) Responsible, Efficient Government: Our Foundation 2) Jobs and the Economy: Building a 21st Century Economy 3) Infrastructure: Indiana as the ‘Crossroads of America’ 4) Education and Workforce Development: Investing in Tomorrow 5) Health and Well-being: A Chance for All Hoosiers 6) Safety and Security: A Primary Responsibility.
-
We re-emphasized our commitment to agriculture and expanded it to include rural communities more broadly.
- We re-emphasized our belief that parents are the primary educators of their children and that political indoctrination has no place in Hoosier classrooms, especially concepts like Critical Race Theory and its progeny.
-
We stated our support for Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 which ensures equal opportunity for women and girls in all facets of education — including athletics — and our belief that biological males should not participate in women or girls sports.
- We added a subsection on adoption, supporting actions that improve the adoption process and that encourage and incentivize adoption in order to place children in loving homes as soon as possible.
-
We added a subsection on mental health, supporting the expansion of mental health services across the state and the improvement of public health infrastructure.
The 2022 Indiana Republican Party platform draft, as unanimously recommended by the Platform Committee, will now go before the Resolutions Committee before being presented to you at our convention on June 18, 2022.
You can see that version of the platform here.
We would like to thank all of those Hoosier Republicans who provided input, and we look forward to seeing you in a few short weeks.
Sincerely,
Randall “Randy” Head, Platform Committee Co-Chair
