Hi there,
As we fight to end the horrors frightened animals in slaughterhouses face every day, the facts are chilling. How is it possible that hundreds of thousands of chickens are boiled (or broiled) alive every year?
The answer is simple, but shocking.
Chickens have been excluded from federal laws that could offer any protection from pain or suffering at slaughter.
Chickens endure some of the worst abuses in our broken food system, and there are no laws in place to protect them.
Remarkably, there are some federal laws that govern the handling of chickens in slaughterhouses—but they have nothing to do with animal welfare. It’s through reported violations of “food safety” laws that we have extensive eyewitness evidence of live birds being thrown, crushed, suffocated, and boiled alive.
That’s typical day-to-day abuse. This year, it’s even worse: the avian influenza outbreak has sparked even more horrors for chickens, with egg factories slaughtering millions of live hens by “ventilation shutdown plus” (VSD+): cutting off ventilation so birds cooked to death in the heat.
The scale of this injustice is astonishing.
Nine out of ten land animals killed for food are chickens. Every one of these animals feels fear and pain just like our beloved pets. None of them are legally protected from abuse.
