Here in Iowa, we know how important it is to elect Democrats to our state legislature. Under a Republican-majority Iowa Senate this term, we’ve seen a historic workforce crisis and threats to reproductive healthcare access, not to mention bills to ban books, jail teachers, and spend public dollars on private school vouchers.

Extremists like GOP Senate President Jake Chapman, pictured above, are writing the laws that directly impact your day-to-day life. Chapman and the Republicans in the legislature control how much funding your child’s school receives and the laws that govern school safety. These politicians are even trying to dictate what can and cannot be taught to your child.

But that’s not all — state legislatures also have the power to defend the sanctity of our federal elections. As the New York Times recently reported, our nation’s state legislatures are uniquely empowered to establish voting laws and certify or overturn election results.
