john,
It’s hard to come up with the words to explain the devastation from yet another school shooting, this time at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. They were 19 babies. They were just starting their lives.
No parent should have to deal with that horror. And while we search for answers, I can’t believe some of the things I’ve been hearing.
For people to say that there is nothing we can do to stop the slaughter of innocent children — I completely reject that.
For Republicans who criticize that we’re politicizing the event?
Well, if offering solutions is politicizing a problem, then Republicans believe that there’s nothing they can do to stop this. And if they don’t think there’s anything to be done, why are they even here?
I have no patience for that, and I’m furious at my colleagues who won’t take even a small step to address the epidemic of gun violence.
Look, no one is saying that one law or one policy is going to completely stop mass shootings, but why can’t we do something? Why can’t we act to stop the proliferation of weapons of war into our communities? Why are we the only country on earth where this continues to happen?
I’m very frustrated, but I’m not stopping for one second. I remain committed to doing everything that I can here in the Senate to move forward the kinds of gun safety laws that 90% of Americans support, even if the NRA and their Republican shills in the Senate don't.
There are solutions that my colleagues and I are working to find to address this.
We ought to be able to use our Democratic majorities to take action for gun safety. And I’m going to fight like hell to keep going, because our babies are worth saving.
