Friend,
In the past week we watched as Black grocery shoppers in Buffalo, N.Y., and fourth-graders in Uvalde, Texas, were massacred by 18-year-olds armed with AR-15s. Lives were snuffed out, tearing communities apart and leaving our country reeling once again from preventable violence.
Enough is enough. That’s why I’m in Houston today: to stand up to the National Rifle Association and demand that people in power take concrete steps to end gun violence now. Click here to watch our roundtable and press conference on Facebook Live starting at 10 a.m. Central time.
Gun violence like this is a uniquely American problem. In the aftermath of Scotland’s school shooting and Australia’s Port Arthur mass shooting, both countries passed commonsense gun violence prevention policies to keep people safe. We cannot continue to do nothing, shooting after senseless shooting.
Our teachers, who put themselves in harm’s way to protect their students, are tired of comforting kids who have been traumatized by tragedy. Our nurses are tired of treating the victims of this terrible violence in their ERs. It is up to us as a union family to stand together and demand a safer future so we all can thrive.
It’s time for us to stand up to the NRA and tell them: Stop the deflection. Enough is enough. Click here to tweet at them and demand an end to gun violence NOW.
Gun violence isn’t inevitable. We have the power to change this. It’s long past time we did.
In unity,
Randi Weingarten
AFT President
