The U.S. is an Outlier in Gun Ownership Laws

We Are Not Powerless to Stop Gun Violence

Many of us feel traumatized and perplexed by the constant news of gun violence in our country. All of us want our loved ones to be safe. Parents and children shouldn't be afraid in their homes, schools, shopping centers, places of worship or community gathering places.

We know that common sense gun safety reforms have worked in other countries. The US ratio of 120.5 firearms per 100 residents (up from 88 per 100 in 2011) far surpasses that of other developed countries. Read a BBC comparison of the US and similar countries' gun violence stats
here.

A POLITICO/Morning Consult
poll conducted after the shooting in Uvalde shows the following support for gun safety reform:

  • Require background checks on all gun sales: Eighty-eight percent strongly or somewhat support; 8% strongly or somewhat oppose. Net approval: +80
  • Create a national database with info about each gun sale: Seventy-five percent strongly or somewhat support; 18% strongly or somewhat oppose. Net approval: +57
  • Ban assault-style weapons: Sixty-seven percent strongly or somewhat support; 25% strongly or somewhat oppose. Net approval: +42
  • Prevent sales of all firearms to people reported as dangerous to law enforcement by a mental health provider: Eighty-four percent strongly or somewhat support; 9% strongly or somewhat oppose. Net approval: +75
  • Make private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks: Eighty-one percent strongly or somewhat support; 11% strongly or somewhat oppose. Net approval: +70
  • Require all gun owners to store their guns in a safe storage unit: Seventy-seven percent strongly or somewhat support; 15% strongly or somewhat oppose. Net approval: +62
A majority of Americans agree on steps that can be enacted so speak up! Each of us must make our desires known to our elected representatives in Congress and the NC legislature. Tell your U.S. Senators and state legislators to take action! Vote for candidates who commit to pass laws to curb gun violence and promote safety. Vote your moral convictions in every election. Talk to others about the importance of voting. Is our allegiance to the gun industry, a particular political party or to the safety of our loved ones?

Although the NC legislature has preempted authority for gun regulation, know that I am committed to safety in our communities and I welcome your input.
