Dear John,

In June, we’re launching an exciting new report: ‘The Power of Big Finance: How to reclaim our democracy from the banking lobby’. Our research exposes the extent of the massive lobbying power big banks and finance firms have over our policymakers, and details how they’re shaping “democratic” policies to line their own pockets.

Please will you join our webinar on Tuesday 7th June at 10am for the launch event? We’ll be broadcasting the event live from parliament with a stellar lineup of panellists - report author David Barmes, Conservative MP Bim Afolami, and SNP MP and shadow Treasury spokesperson Alison Thewliss.

We believe our democracy should work for people and communities, not banks in the City of London. We want as many people as possible to put their questions to MPs. So if you can make it John, please register to join us now.

What: Presentation and panel debate: How can we ensure the future of finance serves the whole of society?

Where: Zoom, broadcasting live from the Houses of Parliament

When: 10am-11.30am, Tuesday 7th June

This event will be chaired by Fran Boait, Positive Money’s Executive Director.

Right now, the cost of living scandal is plunging millions of people into poverty. And our multi-millionaire Chancellor is making the poorest bear the brunt of tax rises and huge energy bills. Meanwhile, banks get public bailouts and tax cuts. It’s shocking. [1] But when we pull back the curtain on what’s going on behind the scenes, it’s not so surprising.

It’s simply not fair that big finance firms are using vast amounts of wealth to manipulate our democratic system in their favour. It’s why our money is being sucked up to big banks in the City of London, instead of shared across communities around the country, or to invest in a new economy that works for people and planet.

We believe that no matter who we are or where we’re from, we all deserve an equal voice and say in our democracy. Big banks and corporations should not be getting privileged access to policymakers. In our new report, we lay out some solutions for how we can reclaim our democracy from the grip of the banking lobby.

Right now the Chancellor is deciding the new rules that will govern big banks’ behaviour post-Brexit. There’s a big risk he’s going to water them down, so this is an important and timely event taking place at the heart of parliament. [2]

John, please will you join us? RSVP now to receive the Zoom link and to submit a question for the panel.

We hope to see you there.
