When I heard about the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that killed 19 children and two teachers, I thought about my own children. I had a hard time sending them off to school yesterday morning.
So to all those elected officials, who in the wake of the gun massacre in Texas plan on attending an NRA conference this weekend — I hope you are going to condemn the organization that is endangering the safety of my children and children across this country.
To all of the elected officials who are offering their thoughts and prayers — if you haven’t worked to pass gun safety legislation, you can now give meaning to the all-too-short lives of the children who were murdered. You can do your small part to help heal families, a community, and a nation by taking an oath today to do everything in your power to end the NRA’s destructive hold on elected officials in this nation.
You can pass universal background check laws, ensure convicted domestic abusers don’t have access to firearms, help families who know a loved one is contemplating suicide ensure they don’t have access to firearms, close the Charleston loophole that lets people buy guns without a completed background check, enact an assault weapons ban, ban large-capacity magazines, and hold irresponsible gun dealers accountable.
In short, stand up as a leader to protect our children and their safety.
As a mother, I don’t think it‘s too much to ask.
I remain committed to reducing this senseless violence for the sake of our children, our families, our neighbors, and our coworkers.
And I need you, right there, alongside me.
