John,
It's been two days since the horrific shooting at Robb Elementary school in Uvlade, Texas. But my heart is still broken thinking about those children and the tragic loss of life.
As a public school teacher, it's impossible to see those pictures from Uvalde and not think of the students I serve here in Bakersfield. It's a tragedy that today's students have to worry about being "next" when they arrive at school in the morning. This was certainly not the case for my generation.
We cannot turn a blind eye to these heinous mass shootings. Inaction is not an option. Because if history is any indicator, the clock is ticking until the next massacre. We are losing time.
We must legislate to protect innocent lives. We can enforce stricter gun registration rules, stronger background checks, banning of assault rifles, and crackdown on the sale of ghost guns. We must also focus on the cause of these shootings and ensure comprehensive mental health awareness. It also means holding social media platforms accountable for the spread of hatred.
I'm frustrated, John. And I'm sure you are, too. But our shared anger and unfathomable sadness will mean nothing if we don’t make our voices heard at the ballot box. The June 7 primaries are around the corner. We can make a change by voting out all the politicians who refuse to stand up to the NRA. The time is now!
Thanks for your support,
