John,

As I think about what happened in Uvalde, Texas, this week I keep asking myself one question: where does this end?

I’m heartbroken, but more than that, I’m angry. Our kids should not have to live in fear of being massacred in the classroom by yet another individual with easy access to guns.

It's also not lost on me that this week's horrific tragedy happened less than ten days after a white supremacist (armed, like the shooter in Uvalde, with an AR-15) murdered people who were going about their shopping routines at a grocery store.

How many more must be slaughtered? How many more families and communities must be destroyed? How many more routine activities must be added to the list of things we cannot do without fear of gun violence?

I have nothing but fury reserved for every person who's thrown up roadblocks to commonsense gun reform. It's a choice to oppose banning automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines. It's a choice to oppose red flag laws and background checks. It's a choice to abuse the Senate filibuster to block legislation that has the support of the vast majority of Americans.

Shame on everyone who has made choices that have perpetuated the ease at which dangerous weapons can fall into the hands of dangerous people.

We should not have to live like this. But months like this happen in America because — for years — we have failed to pass laws that we know will reduce gun violence.

The time for cowardice, inaction, and excuses is over. And I promise you I will not give up the fight until we get the changes we so desperately need.

Sincerely,

Jennifer
