Hello,
My heart is heavy. The events in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday are every parent's worst nightmare. My reaction is not just as a representative – it’s as a dad. It is beyond words what those families are experiencing. Their community will never be the same.
There have been too many heartbreaking moments of silence in the halls of Congress and not nearly enough moments of action. I voted the bipartisan background checks bill through the House over a year ago as well as a bill to end the Charleston Loophole. I am with all of you in demanding the Senate end the obstruction and take action on gun safety legislation.
I am cosponsoring Rep. Lucy McBath's bill to establish a national "Red Flag" law. It will allow family members and law enforcement to obtain an extreme risk protection order to remove access to firearms for those who are a danger to themselves or others. We need to get this done, and I will be voting YES next month when the bill is brought forward.
People should be able to send their kids to school, go to the grocery store, or go to church without having to fear for their lives. But gun violence in our schools has become so commonplace that our children have heartbreakingly dubbed themselves the "mass-shooting generation."
Having met with parents whose kids were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, I am committed to seeing this devastation end. I will never stop fighting to protect our kids because we cannot accept this as normal. The time for action is now.
It's an honor to serve you,
Derek
