Each year, major corporations―from Tesla, Nike, and FedEx to Google, Disney, and AT&T―suck up billions of dollars in tax dollars through subsidies and direct investment by federal, state and local governments. Amazon ranks 11th on the Good Jobs First subsidy tracker with more than $3.5 billion in taxpayer subsidies over the years. Starbucks has benefited from more than $4 million and Apple has gotten $1.7 billion.[1]
And yet, the list of corporations where workers are reporting labor violations or illegal anti-union intimidation and retaliation grows larger every day.
The National Labor Relations Board issued a complaint against Starbucks for 29 unfair labor practice charges, including more than 200 violations of the National Labor Relations Act.[2]
Amazon was forced to enter a National Settlement agreement with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in December after illegally violating workers’ rights.[3] That followed an order from the labor board only the month before, in November, requiring Amazon to hold a revote after illegally interfering in an election in Bessemer, Alabama where workers were trying to form a union.[4]

This month, Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), introduced the No Tax Breaks for Union Busting Act, which would end taxpayer subsidization of anti-union activity. According to the IRS, companies spend at least $340 million each year on blatant union-busting activities including anti-union advertising, anti-union consultants, so-called “captive audience meetings,” and violations of the National Labor Relations Act.[5]
These activities should not be tax deductible. Nor should these union-busting corporations receive federal contracts.
President Biden could issue an executive order denying federal contracts to corporations deemed to have broken federal labor law.
Sign the petition today demanding President Biden and Congress act to stop taxpayer dollars from padding the pockets of multibillion dollar corporations that violate labor law.
