Friend,
I first heard the news about the Uvalde tragedy right before a town hall I had already scheduled. It was a gut punch as I thought of how I felt when my own children were in school when Sept. 11th happened, and the terror I felt, wondering where the next attack would be.
This past Tuesday night, I didn’t start the town hall with a moment of silence, as we’ve had too many of those. Instead, I asked my constituents what they think we need to do to bring about change. I told them that I had tried to work across the aisle on reasonable gun laws but that not a single Republican in DC took me up on my offer, so I was turning to them, my constituents in a very purple district, for their ideas. What followed was an amazing 45 minute conversation among Democrats and Republicans, and it was clear that their mandate to Congress is: get something done.
I’m proud to have cosponsored legislation to ban assault weapons like the one used in Uvalde. Over a year ago, I joined my colleagues in the House again to pass legislation that would expand background checks and close dangerous loopholes that allow criminals to get guns — legislation that has not yet been passed by the Senate.
These measures are common sense. Over 90% of Americans, including gun owners, support expanding background checks. It’s long past time for us to pass laws that will keep our families safe.
Will you sign your name and demand Senate Republicans vote to pass lifesaving Universal Background Checks?
