Friends,
Once again, our nation grieves.
In the last two weeks, our country has been shaken to its core by the senseless loss of lives to gun violence.
An elementary school in Uvalde. A grocery store in Buffalo. A church in Laguna Woods.
I’m heartbroken, and I’m angry. Angry that these shootings keep happening. Angry at how predictable this cycle of gun violence is and the lack of willingness from NRA-backed politicians to try and stop them.
These aren’t isolated events. The proliferation of guns contributes to rising gun violence across the country and at home here in Maryland.
I lost my cousin, Cathy, to gun violence when she was killed by her estranged boyfriend. Nothing can ever replace that loss. But we can do everything in our power to protect families from ever having to experience that same pain.
I worked with advocates in Annapolis to pass Cathy’s law which enabled judges to take guns away from domestic abusers. In Congress, I’ve fought for universal background checks, red flag laws, and raising the age to purchase a gun to 21. And as Attorney General, I’ll keep fighting for common-sense reforms that save lives.
I’m still as determined as ever to end this epidemic of gun violence from plaguing our streets, schools, grocery stores, places of worship, and movie theaters. We must turn our collective grief into action.
We can and must do better. Together we can make change.
