FOUR LGBTQ STORIES WORTH KNOWING
1. LGBTQ Lawmakers Unite to Protect Trans Kids
With hundreds of anti-trans bills introduced in state legislatures this year, Victory Institute leveraged the collective power of our LGBTQ state legislator network earlier this month to share resources on how to protect trans kids and their families and ensure they have access to the lifesaving health care they need. We hosted a briefing for LGBTQ elected officials on California state Senator Scott Wiener’s trans refuge state bill, which would shield trans kids and their families from penalties when seeking gender-affirming care.
At a press conference of the year, Mayor Parker announced LGBTQ state legislators from 20 states committed to creating trans refuge states. Bills have already been introduced in California, Minnesota and New York and Connecticut just introduced and passed their bill!

3. New White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre Shatters Lavender Ceiling
Karine Jean-Pierre is officially the first out LGBTQ person and the first Black person in U.S. history to serve as White House press secretary! Victory Institute’s Presidential Appointments Initiative, which works with the Biden-Harris Administration to recommend and advocate for qualified LGBTQ leaders ready to serve in the administration, advocated for her nomination. Read her full profile in the New York Times to learn more about her journey to the White House and vision for her role and the future of our country!
4. New Report: The State of LGBTQ Politics in Brazil
Exciting news from our global team. With our in-country partner #VoteLGBT, Victory Institute launched a new report about the state of LGBTQ politics in Brazil! The report outlines current LGBTQ representation and power in Brazil, what challenges exist and key recommendations for increasing and strengthening LGBTQ democratic power in the country.
