John, as a mother and grandmother, and nurse, I am sickened and devastated by the news of yet another mass shooting. I respect the rights of hunters and the American tradition of responsible gun ownership. But earlier this week, an 18-year-old in shattered the bodies of 19 little children and two teachers with a military-style weapon designed to be used on the battlefield.

The mass shooting in Uvalde comes just days after the Buffalo community was devastated by a hateful shooting targeting Black Americans. This cycle of senseless violence must end. It doesn't have to be like this, John. There is a solution.

Voters overwhelmingly support commonsense gun legislation: universal background checks, closing loopholes, and restricting the sale of military-style assault weapons. Americans want this legislation because we know that it would say countless lives, like the innocent children ripped away from their families. But career politicians and the gun lobby continue to stand in the way, obstructing change against all morals and all reason.

Heartbroken parents across America are counting on Washington to stand up and lead before the next shooting. I promise to do everything I can to stop these horrific, heartbreaking tragedies.

In the Senate, I will be a leader on gun violence prevention and will support efforts to end the filibuster in order to pass meaningful legislation to make all of our communities safer.

Change is possible, but only if we remain hopeful and continue to put in the hard work this moment demands of us. As a nurse, as a mother, as a grandmother, I couldn't care more deeply about this issue. I promise to remain hopeful and dedicated to delivering solutions. Thank you for believing that we can and will win a safer, better future.
