John,
I am heartbroken.
Time and time again, we have failed to prevent innocent lives from being lost to senseless gun tragedies. So I implore my colleagues from both sides of the aisle: please, take action and save lives . It is unforgivable that we are in a position to help solve this crisis and continue to come up short.
As a first step, yesterday, I chaired a hearing in the Judiciary Committee on the nomination of Steve Dettelbach to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives–the primary agency tasked with combating gun crime. That agency has been without a director for seven years because gun groups have lobbied for it to stay that way.
With overwhelming support from a bipartisan group of former Justice Department officials and law enforcement organizations, Steve Dettelbach should be swiftly confirmed to lead ATF.
John, we know we need to offer more than thoughts and prayers at this moment. Let’s start by confirming this well-qualified nominee to lead ATF. [link removed]
My best,
Dick Durbin
