Linda Mendonça Talks About Need to Consult School Nurses
|
Last week the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials' Public Health Review Morning Edition featured NASN President Linda Mendonça. She discussed school nurses and COVID-19 and the need for more input regarding school health policy.
"Every American schoolchild deserves a school with a full-time nurse, both to help navigate through a pandemic such as we are experiencing or just supporting students really physically and their mental health to ensure that they have that academic readiness to be successful students," said Mendonça.

Article: Asthma Outcomes Disproportionate in Underrepresented Groups |

Don't miss this Journal of School Nursing article, perfectly timed during National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. Asthma morbidity disproportionately impacts children from low-income and racial/ethnic minority communities. Their results indicate that school nurse-supervised asthma therapy could potentially mitigate racial/ethnic and socioeconomic inequities in childhood asthma.

|
School nurses are actively monitoring vaccine uptake for student populations. The Mayo Clinic has a resource to identify U.S. COVID-19 vaccine rates by state. This resource also reports U.S. COVID-19 vaccine rates by age. Learn more.

Know Your COVID-19 Community Level |
|
COVID-19 Community Levels is a tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high. Hospital beds in use, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area will determine community levels. School nurses can use the map of the U.S. by county to track the community level of transmission for your school(s), which is updated weekly.

School Nurses Can Improve Outcomes
|
|
ME/CFS is a long-standing stigmatized disease that contributes to the majority of cases being undiagnosed. This stigma lingers in medical and educational communities. Thus, school nurses with knowledge of ME/CFS are in a position to improve outcomes for students. In this course, experts in the diagnosis and management of ME/CFS provide a panel discussion about ME/CFS and provide school nurses with the knowledge and tools to help recognize ME/CFS in the student population. Resources are provided to share with families, students, administrators, and staff members. ME/CFS resources and education permit early intervention, referral and diagnosis, treatment, and academic accommodations. Learn more and complete the course.

School Shooting Resources Available for School Nurses, Families |

Tips for Protecting Children in Violence-Based Emergencies |
|
Shooting violence in schools accounts for less than one percent of deaths of school-aged youth. However, 70 percent of caregivers are at least somewhat concerned about the risk their child faces from school shootings, and more than one-third of caregivers reported being very concerned about the prospect. Practicing lockdown and shooter drills have the potential to empower staff and save lives, but without proper caution, they can risk causing harm to participants. Here are some tips from Save the Children and Safe and Sound Schools on how to keep children safe in violent emergencies.

The Coalition to Support Grieving Students provides resources that will empower school communities across America in the ongoing support of their grieving students, staff, and families. A recently developed resource is Grief Among Students of Color.

May is National Adolescent Health Month (NAHM) |
|
Help youth reach their full potential during NAHM. Join the Office of Population Affairs in celebrating young people’s strengths and potential, encouraging youth engagement, and highlighting key topics in adolescent health. Parents, caregivers, youth-serving professionals, and healthcare providers can empower youth to make decisions about their own health and become leaders in their communities. During NAHM, help adolescents build on their strengths, overcome barriers to accessing services and resources, and make healthy and informed decisions.

Special Topics Cafe:
School Nurse Role in the Development of the School-Level COVID-19 Management Plan
June 1, 3:30 p.m. PT
Oregon School Nurses Association partnered closely with the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority in developing the School-Level COVID-19 Management Plan template and instructions/tools. Nurses will have the opportunity to go through the template to understand what their role could be in the development of a plan. This meeting will also allow nurses to reflect upon what additional COVID-19 tools may be needed heading into the 2022-2023 school year.
