Friend ? If you walk into your local Best Buy store, you could unknowingly purchase a TV that contains dangerous, toxic chemicals.
Best Buy and other electronics retailers are selling TVs that contain organohalogen and other toxic flame retardants in their plastic casing. These chemicals can get into the air inside our homes ? jeopardizing our families' health.
The bottom line: Our families deserve to be protected from these deadly chemicals.
With President Trump and EPA Chief Andrew Wheeler's cozy ties to corporations and chemical companies, we know that the Trump administration isn't going to step in and do anything about these toxic chemicals. That's why it's up to us to push retailers like Best Buy to stop selling TVs with toxic chemicals and keep consumers safe.
Now is a critical moment to act ? families across the country will be purchasing thousands of new TVs this holiday season. That means scores of homes ? and children ? could soon be exposed. As consumers, we have ENORMOUS power to protect the health of our communities. We know that major retailers ? just like Best Buy ? care about what YOU think. To make sure Best Buy hears from consumers across the country, we need 1,500 activists to speak out RIGHT NOW against toxic TVs in your city.
Send a message to Best Buy and demand that they remove TVs with toxic flame retardants from their shelves ? [link removed]
When we walk into Best Buy to buy electronics and appliances for our homes, we expect the products to be safe. But scientists have found that exposure to the flame retardants in some of the TVs sold at Best Buy can cause cancer, thyroid disruption, and learning defects. Studies have found these chemicals in the bodies of adults, children, and pregnant mothers after exposure.
The cycle continues even after you get rid of your TV: They can also be especially dangerous to workers who recycle the plastics from TVs and other electronics in facilities around the world. And these chemicals make it much harder to recycle the plastic ? adding to our global plastic waste crisis.
We know that it's possible to make safer TVs without these toxic chemicals. In fact, the European Union recently voted to ban organohalogen flame retardants in plastic TV casings starting April 2021. What's more, some companies ? like Apple ? are already using alternative chemicals or innovating to avoid these chemicals altogether.
The bottom line is that buying a TV shouldn't pollute your home with toxic chemicals. That's why we're working with LCV supporters like you across the country to send urgent messages to North America's #1 electronics retailer: Best Buy. Raise your voice! Tell Best Buy: It's time to STOP selling toxic TVs.
Best Buy WILL listen to their customers. Sign the petition and tell Best Buy to step up and keep our families safe from toxic chemicals ? [link removed]
