Dear fellow MoveOn member,
My name is Dr. Dona Murphey, and I’m a community advocate, mother, and physician in Texas. My heart hurts as I watch our communities get attacked by gun violence time and time again. We are mourning. We all deserve to live in a country that is safe, where everyone can learn and grow without the threat of violence.
But on the heels of the horrifying elementary school shooting that left at least 19 children and two teachers dead, the National Rifle Association (NRA) is scheduled to begin its annual meeting TOMORROW at the Houston First Corporation’s convention center and hotel, a few short hours from Uvalde. It’s beyond inappropriate for the Houston First Corporation to host the NRA, Donald Trump, and other conservative politicians to talk about expanding gun rights and celebrating gun culture while families are still mourning the loss of their loved ones.
Will you sign this petition demanding that the National Rifle Association or Houston First Corporation cancel the NRA convention immediately?

Sign the petition to demand the National Rifle Association (NRA) cancel its upcoming Texas convention out of respect for the families and communities who lost their children to gun violence.
Dear MoveOn member,
The National Rifle Association (NRA) is planning a massive convention in Texas, scheduled for May 27-29, just days after the horrifying elementary school shooting which left at least 19 children and two teachers dead in Uvalde, Texas.1 It’s beyond inappropriate for the NRA to host Donald Trump and other conservative politicians to talk about expanding gun rights while families are still mourning the loss of their loved ones. Tell the NRA to cancel their upcoming Texas convention out of respect for the families who lost their children to gun violence.
The NRA's website boasts that the convention will be a "celebration of Second Amendment rights," but how can dozens of politicians celebrate, knowing that days prior, Texans and their children lost their sense of safety, and 19 children and two adults lost their lives?2
Every single parent should have the peace of mind to know that when they're sending their child to school, they'll be safe and protected. We have to get to the root of our societal problems here in the United States. It's deeply troubling when attack after attack on our schools, places of worship, and community institutions simply go on without any government response or intervention other than thoughts, prayers, and soundbites on cable television.
While there are differences of opinion on the NRA and the exact current-day interpretation of the Second Amendment, we should all be able to agree that it’s inappropriate for the largest gun lobbying organization in the world to host a celebratory convention in the very same state as a mass shooting that killed at least 19 children.3 The NRA should cancel their convention right now, full stop.
Thank you so much.

Want to support our work? Right-wing groups are spending tens of millions of dollars on TV ads to smear critical progressive legislation. Meanwhile, donations to progressive groups like MoveOn are plummeting now that a Democrat is in the White House, meaning we don’t have the resources to fight back. That's a huge problem, and that's why we urgently need your support.
